Bad people act with a malice that makes them less than human, and the good make compromises with evil, carelessness and false morality that come back to wreck them.

It is a chastening tour de force: we too think that we can reserve our kindness to those we think deserve it, only to find that all too often we are deceived and self-deceived, and cruel even in our charities. Like the best novels about the past, McCann's is an angry rebuke to our present difficulties.

Just Eat. National Trust. Premium Articles. Benjamin Percy, a writer whose work Dan Chaon called "bighearted and drunk and dangerous," shows his mastery of narrative suspense as the novel builds to its surprising climax. The Wilding shines unexpected light on our shifting relationship with nature and family in contemporary society. He teaches at Iowa State University. In compelling, image-driven prose, Benjamin Percy confounds the old polarities about wilderness and development by sending three generations of men into a doomed canyon, and letting so much hell break loose we can't tell the heroes from the villains-which feels exactly right.

This is a dark, sly, honest, pleasing, slip-under-your-skin-and-stay-there kind of a book. Benjamin Percy is a stunning storyteller. His fearful wildernesses, both physical and psychic, kept me up through the night. Not just a "must" read, but a need read, this book is timely, terrifying, terrific. Like James Dickey, Benjamin Percy drags his characters into the wilderness—into a canyon as black as a gaping mouth, where they struggle to stay alive and in control of what makes them human-but for a new generation of readers concerned with the vanishing West.

These stories mark the beginning of what is bound to be a long and brilliant career for Benjamin Percy. Skip to content. Perusall turns often-skipped solitary reading assignments into engaging collective activities students don't want to miss. Students collectively annotate each reading — asking questions, responding to each other's questions, or sharing other perspectives or knowledge.

Perusall's novel data analytics automatically grade these annotations to ensure that students complete the reading, and as an instructor, you get a classroom of fully prepared students every time. Perusall provides you with a simple "confusion report" that summarizes areas your students misunderstood, disagreed with each other about, or were most engaged with — along with examples of the best annotations, so you can call out specific questions or individuals in class.
